The most unique thing about Bitcoin is that its software is still compatible with the versions that were released in 2010 and 2011, according to Tycho Onnasch, co-founder of Zest Protocol. “And if you really think about it, there is really no software that exists that works like that. Try to find a game or some version of a program that was released in 2010 and try to install it on your computer. It won't work.”
In this episode of Off the Block, Tycho discusses how Bitcoin can become productive capital, the emergence of borrowing and lending on BTC, the role of Stacks as a Bitcoin Layer 2, and the broader outlook for Bitcoin DeFi.
Here are our favorite interview questions from the 6th episode:
- “Should Bitcoin have smart contract capabilities? Where do you stand between purists and those who want Bitcoin to compete more directly in programmable finance?”
- “What is the most misunderstood part of the Bitcoin DAT model?”
- “Is the biggest risk for Bitcoin-denominated companies the possibility of having to sell their BTC? If not, what is the real risk?”
- “What are the pros and cons of a DAT compared to a Bitcoin ETP/ETF? Where do DATs shine, and what are their limitations?”
- “How big could Bitcoin DAT holdings be by next year? What’s your expectation for market size?”
